Jonti – Triple J Friday Afternoon DJ Set (20-01-2012)

Almost let the week slip without some music. Tsk… Tsk… Tsk… I’m gonna blame the weather or perhaps that much of my day is taken up with work (ala corporate day slave type) and nights hanging with mates and/or seeing Girl Talk and/or Them Crooked Vultures. The latter being an absolute monster gig in some rather disgusting heat at Festival Hall. I am working on a YouTube page for the site so I can upload my shitty mobile videos of such gigs up. Can’t be a paparazzo at every gig…

Anyway, my selection of tracks for the past fortnight (well, I did miss out on last week’s post…) is after the jump…

Tim & Jean – Come Around
One of the finalist in this year’s Triple J Unearthed High competition. Nice bit of synth pop goodness which reminds me a bit of Passion Pit or of Walter Meego. You can’t help but think happy thoughts and good times. Kinda like the summer holidays really…

Cassian – Fuck Song
Yes, I know, I wrote about Cassian last week and yes, it’s been floating around the web for a while now but it’s so damn groovy! Think more 80s funk/porn groove though and let’s be honest, deep down we all love it. I guess it makes the name of the track that much more appropriate.

Big Scary – Hey Somebody
Ah, Big Scary. Not a true description of the duo. Scary? No.., Big? Very soon I think . With vocals that remind me of a mix of Jeff Buckley and Robert Smith and a wicked indie garage rock sound, think a bit of Strokes, Whites Stripes and even Kings Of Leon. They’ve even supported the Editors during their nation tour earlier this month. A big thanks to our music mole, Hall-E for introducing these guys to my ears.

Alberta Cross – Song Three Blues
Some more blues/rock/croon for your ears. This is the opening track to their debut ‘Broken Side Of Time’ and really sets the mood of an album full of epic riffs and brooding blues. One of my favourite albums from last year.

Miike Snow – Silvia (Sinden Remix)
Something a bit different from Sinden here. Normally one would expect a fidgety ghetto house killer but what you get here a piece of I guess you could call blissful progressive house. The vocal track is kept to minimum here but when it is introduced it is a nice compliment to the rest of the music.

Bag Raiders – Nil By Mouth (Knightlife Remix)
Gonna throw it out there that this track probably isn’t the most well known of the Raiders tracks. When you take two of the big breakout local electronic acts from last year and let them flex their synthy space disco muscles you will eventually finish with something a bit special.

Broken Bells – The High Road
Another collaboration band here. Broken Bells is a new project between Danger Mouse who is one half of Gnarls Barkley amongst other things, and James Mercer of The Shins. This track is the opening single to their forthcoming album in March and I’ve gotta say I like what I hear.

Grizzly Bear – Boy From School (Hot Chip Cover)
Wow! What a cover! 2009 indie darlings Grizzly Bear have recently in the country on tour and popped into Triple J for their ‘Like A Version’ breakfast segment and decided to cover this Hot Chip classic. Funnily enough, Hot Chip are also the feature artists this week also.

And done! Hope that covers everyone for last and now this week’s music fix. Now to gear up for Calvin Harris tonight and the monstrosity that is the Big Day Out tomorrow. As always, if you dig the artist/music the go buy it whether physical/digital and go see them live. Your conscience and the artists will love you more for it!

Jonathan Boulet‘s self-titled debut LP is also the feature album on Triple J this week and demonstrates how much of a wunderkind he is having wrote, recorded, produced and played every note of the album’s uplifting folk pop sound. Did I mention Modular have snapped him up as well? Not too bad for a bright-eyed 21 year old from Sydney’s northwest.

Triple J’s Craig Schuftan presents a time-travelling adventure in sound. Imagine Girl Talk with a copy of Marshall McLuhan‘s ‘The Mechanical Bride’ in one hand and a key to the Triple J vinyl library in the other. Craig Schuftan’s 80MPH Stolen Plutonium Megamixxx

If you aren’t blessed with the pleasure of listening to Triple J during the day it’s well worth visiting their site and checking out Craig’s ‘Acceptable in the 80s‘ page and check out the vodcasts.I think the blurb from the site sums everything up nicely.

Musing on the future of music in 1986, former Van Halen singer and 80s party dude David Lee Roth was certain of nothing, except that the art of tomorrow would be nothing like the art of today. “It won’t be like anything we’re familiar with, I know that”. So, why, now that we live in the future, does everything look and sound a bit like it’s from 1986? Has the fabric of time been altered somehow? Have we run out of new ideas? Or does our new-found fondness for synth-pop and shoulder pads have some deeper significance?

To find out, author and Triple J culture guy Craig Schuftan dons a pair of stupid 80s sunglasses, soups up his sports car with one of those flux capacitor things, and risks further damage to the space-time continuum by travelling back to the origin point of the current crisis – the 1980s. There, he finds himself in a strange world – a world where people listen to futuristic robot-pop while spending money they don’t have on ridiculous clothes so as to take their minds off the impending apocalypse. Yes, all very strange – and yet at the same time, eerily familiar…

Really, really cool stuff. I might even head up to Sydney and check out the 80s exhibition over at the Powerhouse Museum. Looks pretty rad. That’d be the right lingo to use in this thread right?

This is just me musing on how popular, but non-commercial radio music has progressed, especially in terms of triple J’s playlist. We are in the midst of the indie hipster sound right now that exploded with the strokes and the vines as i recall around 2003 or something, with forays into french electro disco dance courtesy of a monster tour by daft punk, and their hairy progeny justice.

I have to admit that back then i had some white bogan friends and white bogan tastes in music… limp bizkit, korn, rammstein and countless nu-metal clones feature in my high school 90s mp3 collection! It was awesome rockin’ out to those sounds!!… i dont listen to them anymore AT ALL, but i still might pull out a few tracks for a laugh. Also, my blogger compatriot The Weekend Warrior recently reminded me of bands i used to absolutely LOVE in the day… specifically INCUBUS whom i still listen to seriously without any comedic or ironic element.

So this got me thinking… who were those awesome bands i would love to hear new material from, or wouldnt mind putting their old cds in the player (CD Player? WTF is that is that like an 8-track player or something?)… Queens of the Stone Age, Kyuss, Filter, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, Tool… a few off the top of my head… these bands had a more timeless sound and their albums are still awesome to listen to today for me. I am personally interested in the next direction g-tar based music takes after indie… i think there is some awesome indie stuff out there like death cab, mgmt, the temper trap… but a lot of it BORES THE CRAP out of me… not enough sack or cojones as Stephen Colbert would say.

So since this is a music-updatey-with-the-latest-stuff-blog, that was my preamble to the new release another of my old fav bands… 30 Seconds To Mars!! I initially got into them just because i loved the movie requiem for a dream (how it all falls apart and was the antithesis of the hollywood happy ending with julia roberts movie)… and jared leto played the main fucked up junkie. Anyways 30 Seconds To Mars has a new album set for release on the 7th of december

entitled “This Is War”… with one of the tracks “Hurricane” featuring guest rhymes from Kanye

Just chilling with my homeboys Yeezy and Brandy Flowers...

Also: the lead single Kings + Queens has an awesome clip featuring activity du jour cycling, and also bikes and cyclists!!!

Chris from the band called into the Morning Show on Triple J this morning to premiere (well on Australian radio anyway), “Uprising” – the first official single from their forthcoming album The Resistance out this September. Chris also spoke about some of the sounds and inspirations of the album but what pricked my ears was the mention that the last track, “Exogenesis” was going to be a 3-part 16 minute symphonic epic. Thumbs up to that!

Anyway, you’re probably all wanting to cop a listen of the track which has been described to be a heavy-rock take on Goldfrapp with elements of Garry Glitter glam-rock, shades of disco and a hint of football-style crowd chanting. You decide:

Earlier this month Lady Sovereign let slip with Dools on triple j that she’d be touring Oz promoting her album as a part of Parklife. This came as a shock since the dates for Parklife hadn’t been confirmed yet! So when is Parklife this year you may be asking? Thankfully they’ve just been announced on inthemix and they’re as follows:

• Saturday 26th September – Brisbane
• Sunday 27th September – Perth
• Saturday 3rd October – Melbourne
• Sunday 4th October – Sydney
• Monday 5th October – Adelaide

The other big international artist(s) that have been confirmed courtesy of inthemix is the Canadian duo MSTRKRFT. Last time the guys were out here it was with Justice and their tour of 2007. Maybe we’ll see another MSTRKRFT/Justice national tour? One can hope…
