Yo! So last week’s post didn’t really happen, chock-a-block busy with friends leaving, Lunar New Year, post St Kilda Festival shenanigans and personal stumbling blocks in the real world… But you’re not here for the whine, you’re here for music.

Anyway, this week’s post is mostly dedicated to the nu disco, electro/fidget bangers and big room tracks that have been given a fair lashing in the car, at work, home, gigs etc… Since I did miss last week’s post it only seems fair I bump up the quantity of tracks. Whether their quality I’ll let you decide… As usual, the files are after the jump.

Classixx – I’ll Get You (Featuring Jeppe)

“Do you like bass? Do you, do you bass?”

Can’t help but crack a smile when this tune gets played. In case you’re wondering who is offering the vocals to this nu disco pop gem, it’s Jeppe Laursen of Junior Senior (R.I.P.) fame. I do find it kinda ironic that for a track that features the line “Do you like bass?”, to be kinda lacking a solid bass beat. Not that it matter since it’s such an awesome track regardless.

The video is directed by none other than Mark “The Cobrasnake” Hunter. And in case you didn’t know, Classixx are playing Sorry Grandma! tonight so swing on by and enjoy some good nu disco fun. Be sure to mention that you’re on my guest list and use the password “Optimo“!

Donna Summer – Bad Girls (SonicC Bootleg)

Ah disco… I sometimes think that perhaps I was born in the wrong era because there would be no doubt I’d be out each weekend dancing away this stuff. Wait, I kinda do that now… Anyway, SonicC is on a good thing here by not messing around with the godfather Moroder‘s work here and tweaks the track enough that it wouldn’t sound out of sort on a d-floor today.

Lee Mortimer & Foamo – Superman (Original Mix)

While not as massive as the epic that is ‘Blau!’, this electro/fidgety track certainly is strong enough to stand on it’s own. A good track to use to shift a set up a notch after a chilled start. Well that’s what I tend to use it for…

Vitalic – Poison Lips

I swear that Vitalic has been inspired by or sampled Stardust who sampled Chaka Khan with the little bit of loopage at the start. Give it a listen and you’ll know what I’m talking about… This track is dark, sultry, sexy all at the same time… And I fucking love it! The video aint too bad either:

Absolutely love the 8-bit noises, distortion and squeaks that populate this track, and that haunting vocals remind me a little of Alison Goldfrapp. Some nice layered stuff here! Speaking of which, she’s got some new stuff out at the moment too…

Dustin Zahn – Stranger (To Stability) (Len Faki Podium Mix)

Perhaps I should retract my previous statement of ‘Poison Lips’ being dark as this track by Dustin Zahn kinda shits all over that… Dark, tribal, heavy and downright evil. If you dig the Proxy, or anything from that dark techno scene you’ll be a fan of this. Tell you what, once you take a step down the dark side in a set it’s kinda tricky to bring it back to a happy place haha! This one is definitely for the big room.

Duke Dumont – Hoy!

There’s something about Middle Eastern music that kinda sucks me in. Powerful and complex at the same time… This track in particular with it’s hypnotic use of drums/percussion and Arabic woodwinds and the whatnot puts me (and possibly you the listener…) into this tribal-like trance.

A-Trak x Drake x Birdman – Loonies To Blow

Electro hip-hop? Me likey! Throw in some nonsensical yet sharp lyrics and you’re on a winner. Watch this track cross boundaries of indie/hipster/commercial circles….

Sway – Mercedes-Benz

Wicked little sample of DJ Mark The 45 King‘s ’900 Number’. Yes, it’s not the first time this has been sampled, but hey, it works. The next party tune for your house warming. Did I mention that airhorns feature a fair bit throughout the track? Airhorns! YES!

Dada Life – Let’s Get Bleeped Tonight (Tiësto Remix)

Ah the track affectionately know around our crew as “the one Tiësto dropped with the Beetroots backspin”. I don’t think I’m ever going to forget the night the Big T dropped ‘Blau!’ and followed immediately after with this killer.  Tiësto doing electro you’re probably thinking? Well it’s better than some of the stuff that is currently on ‘Kaleidoscope’… Oh schnapp!

Florence + The Machine – You’ve Got The Love (Jamie xx Re-Work Featuring The xx)

“You’ve got the love. You’ve got the love…”

Jamie from The xx remixing Florence + The Machine covering The Source/Candi Staton. Whew! Now that we got that out of the way… Bit of a chilled breakbeat vibe thanks to the stuttering snares and harps/strings to this remix which makes it a great choice to start off a set early on. The pitch bending/sampling of Florence’s voice in the chorus is also quite cool.

Pretty shit I think… Sure, you can be influenced and/or inspired by the hardcore/punk scene etc. which can be seen in the type of electrotrash house music these two create (which I love btw…), but it doesn’t necessarily mean that your love/skill will translate over to another performance medium. Yeah, I dunno about this video. Seems like there’s no real narrative or message behind the video at all. Maybe it’s about punching girls? Hmm… No, that’s not cool at all. Was the director just a tad inspired by Justice’s “Stress” music video?

Doesn’t really serve a point but to flog their Diesel collaboration. If it is meant to promo the collaboration it fails in my book. I mean, the original promo video for the 55DSL collaboration featuring said tune was way more cooler. Humping rabbits, LSD toad,  a grizzly bear rocking Cazal 607s damn it!

I think the video for “Cornelius” seemed a lot more fun….

In the end, all will be forgiven once this Saturday comes around when they hit the stage at Stereosonic. Be prepared to get your “Whoop! Whoop!” on! Or is that “Warp! Warp!”? Hmm… The questions that haunt a man…

Welcome one and all to another week of music from your truly. It’s looking like this week’s post is gonna skew towards the electronic side of my musical tastings. I promise that’s it’s all gonna be accessible! Alternatively, I could mention my obsession over Radiohead’s back catalogue but you’ve all heard of them before anyway…

Ryskee – Leave Me Amor (The Bloody Beetroots Remix)

Ryskee have got your shoegazing needs covered

First cab off the ranks is Ryskee, a duo comprising of Frenchman Paul de Homem-Christo (aka Play Paul aka Guy-Man bro’s from Daft Punk) and Danish vocalist Leslie Ming.

I’m so confused by this track. The Beetroots are supposed to suck me in, chew and spit me out in a grind of chunky bass and ripping synths. They produce the stuff that gets you hot and sweaty on the d-floor. This track… Ummm… This track is nothing like that.  I’d expected to hear this on the soundtrack to a John Hughes 80s teen flick or heck even off an M83. It’s dreamy. It’s cheesy. It’s wispy. It’s shoegaze. It’s FUCKING FANTASTIC.

MSTRKRFT – Heartbreaker (Featuring John Legend)

I have to admit that the Fist Of God was a little bit of a letdown for me, it was kinda scattered all over the place. I do really dig the tracks “1000 Cigarettes”, “VuVuVu” and of course this one though so it’s not all doom and gloom. “Heartbreaker” stands out more me because it blends the catchy, uptempo feel that the music offers and gels together the lamenting croon of John Legend. What you get is an interesting mix of a track where you kinda want to jump around but figure it might be too painful to do so…. Awww!

Anyway, here’s the video to the track featuring hipsters/cool kids, a love story, disapproving father and a convenience store. Wooo!

Jamie T – Sticks ‘N’ Stones

Yeah this track has been out a while but with “Chaka Demus” getting a bit of a flog on the radio of late I thought it’d be good to visit old faithful… Anyway, I just really dig the cocky vibe and bravado the track extrudes… It’s just damn cool. Video below for those interested and yes, the same vibe aurally is transferred visually:

“Sticks ‘N’ Stones” will appear on Jamie’s forthcoming album Kings and Queens which is due out in early September.

So that’s it, a very small post this week. As always, if you dig the artist/music the go buy it whether physical/digital and go see them live. Your conscience and the artists will love you more for it!

What happens when the Bloody Beetroots decide to collaborate with The Cool Kids? You get “Awesome”. I’ve gotta admit this track isn’t growing on me at all, seems to be missing that killer edge. Anyway, you can make up your own mind about the track:

Ah, memories….

Word on the street and over the airwaves is that the Bloody Beetroots are expected to come back to Oz in another nationwide tour. The tour is looking to happen around the November/December window which has lead many to speculate that they’ll be playing at Stereosonic which does cut laps around the country. Here’s hoping they’ll do a few sideshows on the side also.
