On May 19, 2005, NASA’s Mars Exploration Rover Spirit captured this stunning view as the Sun sank below the rim of Gusev crater on Mars. This Panoramic Camera mosaic was taken around 6:07 in the evening of the rover’s 489th Martian day, or sol.

Sunset and twilight images are occasionally acquired by the science team to determine how high into the atmosphere the Martian dust extends, and to look for dust or ice clouds. Other images have shown that the twilight glow remains visible, but increasingly fainter, for up to two hours before sunrise or after sunset. The long Martian twilight (compared to Earth’s) is caused by sunlight scattered around to the night side of the planet by abundant high altitude dust. Similar long twilights or extra-colorful sunrises and sunsets sometimes occur on Earth when tiny dust grains that are erupted from powerful volcanoes scatter light high in the atmosphere.

Kanye West brings his vision to life in his highly-anticipated short film Runaway. The 35-minute visuals were directed by West, written by Hype Williams, and art directed by Vanessa Beecroft. Filmed in Prague, the soundtrack features songs from the rapper’s fifth album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, including “Devil in a New Dress,” “POWER,” “All of the Lights” with Rihanna, “Lost in the World,” and the title track “Runaway.”

Described as “a tale of loss and renewal,” the ambitious story stars Kanye as Griffin and supermodel Selita Ebanks as The Phoenix, who crashes down to Earth and falls in love with her rescuer. Nicki Minaj narrates the beginning of the film in her British accent and ‘Ye pays homage to the late Michael Jackson.

If it was good enough for Yeezy to blog about, I guess I can too… Video is directed by Special Problems who have done videos for the likes of Midnight Juggernauts, Cut Off Your Hands, Wolfmother and Tame Impala.

Jonathan Boulet‘s self-titled debut LP is also the feature album on Triple J this week and demonstrates how much of a wunderkind he is having wrote, recorded, produced and played every note of the album’s uplifting folk pop sound. Did I mention Modular have snapped him up as well? Not too bad for a bright-eyed 21 year old from Sydney’s northwest.

“Folsom Prison”, “Ya-Yas” revisited…

It’s hardly a new concept, but recreating famous albums could be the new black. Tex Perkins is replicating Johnny Cash’s two 1968 sets at Folsom State Prison at Folsom, California, which led to the “Live At Folsom” album. Perkins is doing it at Laverton’s Port Phillip Prison tonight. If you are living the sensible life outside the bars of justice then you can catch Tex and his show from 1st till the 12th September at the Athenaeum Theatre.

Meantime, inspired by his recent involvement in the star-studded tour doing the Beatles’ 1968 White Album, Tim Rogers is putting together another star-studded bill to recreate the Rolling Stones’ “Get Yer Ya-Yas Out” live album on November 27 at Melbourne’s Corner Hotel.

EMI Music is thanking the heavens for an unexpected marketing boost for Empire of the Sun in America. The band’s Luke Steele has recorded a track “What We Talkin’ About” which opens Jay-Z’s “Blueprint 3” album. Seems the rap superstar was watching one of his fave TV shows “Entourage” when he heard Empire of the Sun’s single “Standing On The Shore” come on. He loved the sound of the voice on it so much he got people to chase up whoever recorded it. Now Steele is on a high-profile album release alongside guests Rihanna, Kanye West, Pharrell, Alicia Keys, and MGMT. Already people like MTV in America are asking “who is Luke Steele” and running profiles on him. This is certain to boost the sales of Empire of the Sun, especially in America.

Meantime the album’s sales in Europe have exceeded gold status (100,000+) with global album sales now surpassing 300,000. Its chart success includes Belgium (30 peak), Italy (27), Switzerland (15), Ireland (17) and UK (19). On top of this, 570,000 single Empire Of The Sun tracks have been officially downloaded worldwide.

Rolex Watches has sent a “cease and desist” lawyers’ letter to Adelaide drum & bass DJ, DJ Rolex. Boo big corporations! Boo!

The letter scolded,

“Given that Rolex is a made up word with no inherent meaning, our client considers that the only reason you have adopted the Rolex trade mark in the name of your business is to appropriate the fame of our client’s Rolex trademark and the reputation it has established for the provision of high quality goods and services.”

So the DJ is back to her birth name of Ebony Guy-Villon before deciding on a new name. Nothing wrong with that name personally, kinda rad actually. Look at it, it’s got hyphens and sounds Frenchy…

Ok, I’m a hip hop/r&b devotee at heart but I’m really feelin’ the electro scene lately especially the remixed song in subject which is on top of my rewind list. I guess this song’s more hip-hop/electro-ish as it features Mr Yeezy himself Kanye West and his 808s.

You would have heard Hudson’s sound in Kanye’s Paranoid… why are you so paranoid, so now he’s blowing up with his solo material starting with his first single Supernova! I was somewhat curious about Mr Hudson mainly because this London, blonde/white hair, producer/song writer/singer rolls with the best of the best in the industry today, i.e. the jigga man Jay-Z, Kid CuDi and Kanye just to name a few. So he must be doin something right!

That was Kanye’s comment on Kris Allen covering “Heartless” on American Idol. Transcend? TRANSCENDS?! Wow… Anyway, I have no idea who the fuck Kris Allen is, but he/she is obviously important enough for Kanye to drop their his/her name.

For those that know me I have a strange fascination with the phenom known as Kanyeezy. I dare even call him a genius because every sort of genius has some form of quirk about them to balance out their awesomeness. In Kanye’s case his awesomeness is the music. Musically he’s on the ball. Ok, most of the time he’s on the ball. Don’t get me started on 808s… Fuckin’ autotune…

Anyway, his quirk? Oh he’s just batshit crazy!I mean this year alone there’s been his post Obama inauguarion party rant, wanting to pose nude, making porno video games, wanting to be Elvis and etc. Thanks to Mindos I’m able to share with you his latest post on his blog about combs. That’s right, combs. Of course it wouldn’t be Kanye if there wasn’t a long ranted speel of some sort:

“Combs have been on the scene ever since humans had hair on his head. which is quite sometime? the date perhaps goes beyond the time of the old stone age. man being man and not a lion would not be content to let his mane run wild and free. so he had to find some ways to tame it. first on the list of combing operations must have been the use of fingers. so in a way the fingers are the first combs of history. today, combs are universal and no corner of the globe is without it.”

Being Kanyeezy it can’t be about regular combs, but knife combs. Yep, these bad boys:

Cracker of an interview with Kanyeezy by the gang over at Men’s Style. Kanye gives insight on what got him into music/producing and what keeps him motivated.

How did Kanye get into music:

“First beat I did,” he recalls, “was in seventh grade, on my computer. I got into doing beats for the video games I used to try to make. My game was very sexual. The main character was, like, a giant penis. It was like Mario Brothers, but the ghosts were, like, vaginas. Mind you, I’m 12 years old, and this is stuff 30-year-olds are programming. You’d have to draw in and program every little step—it literally took me all night to do a step, ’cause the penis, y’know, had little feet and eyes.”

On what motivates and drives him:

“People ask me a lot about my drive. I think it comes from, like, having a sexual addiction at a really young age,” he says. “Look at the drive that people have to get sex—to dress like this and get a haircut and be in the club in the freezing cold at 3 A.M., the places they go to pick up a girl. If you can focus the energy into something valuable, put that into work ethic . . . “
