So this has been sitting in my inbox a while getting neglected but no more till I found out So-Me and Machine Molle worked on the music video.

And the French marketing machine is up and running as I want the New Era flat cap and track n field jacket that features are faux Jamaica merchandise…

So anwyay, who are Jamaica you are asking? Well, formally known as Poney Poney, they’re I guess you could call a lovely mix of indie-electro-synth-garage-rock. Think prominent bassline, snares and kick drums, catchy guitar riffage and subtle and simple vocals over the top.

Anyway, the guys have teamed up again with Xaiver de Rosney of Justice fame and Daft Punk’s sound engineer Peter J. Franco (just to name drop) to help out on their debut album which is slated for an August release. For those interested, the last time they collaborated under the Poney Poney name it sounded a little like this:

So yeah, a name change but still the same-same… But hey, if it aint broke then don’t fix it! If I was to rant further on that topic I could always start some hate on MGMT latest outing…

First stumbled upon Chilly Gonzales about 2 years ago when Boys Noize remixed his single ‘Working Together’. Wind forward the clock and Gonzales returns the favour with his amazing version of last year’s rave epic ‘Waves’ by Erol Alkan & Boys Noize.

To celebrate his current US ‘Pillow Talk’ tour featuring artists like A-Trak, Andrew WK and Sia, Gonzales has released a piano mixtape for your listening pleasure. The mixtape features interesting mix of piano and orchestral sounds layered over the original hip-hop and electro beats of the tracks covered.

This is just me musing on how popular, but non-commercial radio music has progressed, especially in terms of triple J’s playlist. We are in the midst of the indie hipster sound right now that exploded with the strokes and the vines as i recall around 2003 or something, with forays into french electro disco dance courtesy of a monster tour by daft punk, and their hairy progeny justice.

I have to admit that back then i had some white bogan friends and white bogan tastes in music… limp bizkit, korn, rammstein and countless nu-metal clones feature in my high school 90s mp3 collection! It was awesome rockin’ out to those sounds!!… i dont listen to them anymore AT ALL, but i still might pull out a few tracks for a laugh. Also, my blogger compatriot The Weekend Warrior recently reminded me of bands i used to absolutely LOVE in the day… specifically INCUBUS whom i still listen to seriously without any comedic or ironic element.

So this got me thinking… who were those awesome bands i would love to hear new material from, or wouldnt mind putting their old cds in the player (CD Player? WTF is that is that like an 8-track player or something?)… Queens of the Stone Age, Kyuss, Filter, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, Tool… a few off the top of my head… these bands had a more timeless sound and their albums are still awesome to listen to today for me. I am personally interested in the next direction g-tar based music takes after indie… i think there is some awesome indie stuff out there like death cab, mgmt, the temper trap… but a lot of it BORES THE CRAP out of me… not enough sack or cojones as Stephen Colbert would say.

So since this is a music-updatey-with-the-latest-stuff-blog, that was my preamble to the new release another of my old fav bands… 30 Seconds To Mars!! I initially got into them just because i loved the movie requiem for a dream (how it all falls apart and was the antithesis of the hollywood happy ending with julia roberts movie)… and jared leto played the main fucked up junkie. Anyways 30 Seconds To Mars has a new album set for release on the 7th of december

entitled “This Is War”… with one of the tracks “Hurricane” featuring guest rhymes from Kanye

Just chilling with my homeboys Yeezy and Brandy Flowers...

Also: the lead single Kings + Queens has an awesome clip featuring activity du jour cycling, and also bikes and cyclists!!!

Ryskee – Leave Me Amor (The Bloody Beetroots Remix)

First cab off the ranks is Ryskee, a duo comprising of Frenchman Paul de Homem-Christo (aka Play Paul aka Guy-Man bro’s from Daft Punk) and Danish vocalist Leslie Ming.

I’m so confused by this track. The Beetroots are supposed to suck me in, chew and spit me out in a grind of chunky bass and ripping synths. They produce the stuff that gets you hot and sweaty on the d-floor. This track… Ummm… This track is nothing like that.  I’d expected to hear this on the soundtrack to a John Hughes 80s teen flick or heck even off an M83. It’s dreamy. It’s cheesy. It’s wispy. It’s shoegaze. It’s FUCKING FANTASTIC.

I have to admit that the Fist Of God was a little bit of a letdown for me, it was kinda scattered all over the place. I do really dig the tracks “1000 Cigarettes”, “VuVuVu” and of course this one though so it’s not all doom and gloom. “Heartbreaker” stands out more me because it blends the catchy, uptempo feel that the music offers and gels together the lamenting croon of John Legend. What you get is an interesting mix of a track where you kinda want to jump around but figure it might be too painful to do so…. Awww!

Anyway, here’s the video to the track featuring hipsters/cool kids, a love story, disapproving father and a convenience store. Wooo!

Jamie T – Sticks ‘N’ Stones

Yeah this track has been out a while but with “Chaka Demus” getting a bit of a flog on the radio of late I thought it’d be good to visit old faithful… Anyway, I just really dig the cocky vibe and bravado the track extrudes… It’s just damn cool. Video below for those interested and yes, the same vibe aurally is transferred visually:

“Sticks ‘N’ Stones” will appear on Jamie’s forthcoming album Kings and Queens which is due out in early September.

So that’s it, a very small post this week. As always, if you dig the artist/music the go buy it whether physical/digital and go see them live. Your conscience and the artists will love you more for it!

So that’s why dirty old men look the way they do. So much talent. So much pulling power haha! Anyway, it’s already been out around the blogs for a while now, but I’m really digging A-Trak’s remix of the track. So much funk/disco to it. A subject dear to my heart, DJing and the ethics behind taking requests from punters. My rule of thumb, if it’s your show you play whatever the fuck you want. If it’s not your show, maybe take a request or two but at the end of the day you’re not a human jukebox…. Anyway, let’s kick things off with Round 1 of Angello vs Hilton.

As some of you would have heard last month, Steve Angello and his crew laid the smackdown on Paris at his showcase durin the WMC. Angello claims Hilton wanted him to play more hip-hop, Hilton claimed that she wanted Bob Sinclar or Daft Punk. Anyway, Angello snubbs hers, Hilton and her handball/boyfriend crack the shits and slap Angello. Steve’s crew then rough them up and get them booted out. Angello’s response to the incident on his Twitter:

“For someone who claims to make records…don’t come into a booth and ask me to play hip-hop and then have your doorman slap me. Or at least if you wanna do that… Don’t moan about it when we all kicked off. Don’t be so fucking rude.”

Hilton’s response? Enjoy:

“The DJ (I don’t even know his name cause he sucks so bad) was playing the worst music ever! I think he was jealous cause Bob Sinclar is a far better DJ then this guy by about a million times. He was so unbelievably rude and all because I asked to play one good song. Then out of nowhere his bodyguard (don’t ask me why he has a bodyguard, like he really needs one. Ha) pushed me really hard, that’s when my boyfriend, like my knight in shining armor, stepped in and told the guy to keep his hands off of me. Then all hell broke loose, it was like something out of a fight movie, it was so frightening.”

So that was the end of Round 1… Round 2 brings the other member of the Swedish House Mafia into play, Sebastian Ingrosso. Two weeks ago Hilton checked in and stayed at the Dylan Hotel in Amsterdam where she wrote the following in their guest book:

Now out of sheer luck Sebastian was also staying at the Dylan and proceed to follow Paris’ guest book entry with this pearler:

After catching the end of Ian Carey the first artist on the list of “to sees” was Grandmaster Flash which I have to say was a bit of a downer. BLASPHEMY! I know you’re probably thinking, “OMGWTFBBQ?! He’s trippin’!”, but I’m dead set on that opinion. Grandmaster’s set was so scattered/start-stop and forever filled with hip-hop preaching… Play the tunes and Melbourne will put it hands up and bounce!

Next up was Lifelike and now that was freekin’ awesome. Ok, I confess I have a soft spot for the French especially when they’re running through the Modular/Oz indie/electro playlist. Cutters, Presets, Ladyhawke… They all made a cameo. Oh and Whitest Boy Alive! I don’t think I’ll ever get sick of Fred Falke’s remix of ‘Golden Cage’ that and Stardust… To be honest though, it didn’t look like Lifelike was enjoying himself. A stark comparison to Grandmaster who loved his own show and banter. So while my original plan was to see Mr Oizo set straight after Lifelike’s, I decided to play the good friend card and agreed to head over to see the Swedish House Mafia in preparation for Pharrell Will.. I mean N.E.R.D… Besides, Oizo was playing at Roxanne’s later that night…

So how was the Mafia you may ask? Pretty good actually. A bit “commercial” for my liking but hey, it got the crowd moving and I was pretty sure Pryda and the ‘mau5 got dropped. Oh, and I heard ‘Show Me Love’ for probably the 3rd time that day…  Little did I know that tiny gripe would pale in comparision to the aural onslaught I’d get when N.E.R.D got on stage… Crackin’ sound you say? Not likely… The wind did a good job of shifting the sound away from the grandstands. No, my ears were deafened by the sheer number of female punters shrieking like 12 year olds when Pharrell was on stage. It was a scene out of those archival Beatles concert news reels except with less skirt and more skin…

So after N.E.R.D our next stop was Joachim Garraud but that meant a walk through Punch-ONz alley… Apparently some poor gal got push down three flights on the grandstand by some dick and then all hell broke loose. Seriously?! WTF?! People!!! Our crew also discovered that the audio sweet spot was just past the inthemix tent when we heard Oakenfold set crystal clear… Oh well… But enough of that, Joachim was awesome. Well, he did rock out with a keytar and I’m biased to that haha! Oh and he also dropped a bit of ‘One More Time’ which is always = WINNER in my book. Bit of bias to French Touch? I sure do! Haha!

I feel bad now saying it, but the next hour really was just filler till Etienne involving CSS and Richie Hawtin considering how great they both are. Oh and Lovefoxxx, Lovefoxxx! That feisty Lovefoxxx! Yep, huge crush on that halfie haha! Damn it! Anyway… Finally, the highlight and pretty much what I was anticipating all night… Etienne de Crécy’s cube! So freekin’ awesome! The tent was packed, the crowd was sweating and dancing away. It was like a BDO Boiler Room! Ah the memories…

Roxanne’s was pretty sweet with Nick Foley and Generik doing a great job of revving up the crowd before Mr Oizo got on. Chardy I’m told was alright too. So yeah Oizo rocked and by near the end of that I was pretty much dunzos for the day/night. Hometime!

So kids, that’s it really… Go Future! Go Etienne! I guess now’s a better time than ever for all of the shout outs:
