I caught these electro-broficionados from Melbourne Trust Us around the traps at a few nights like So Electric night, and from what I’ve heard they combine synths from the 80s, bass from Ed Banger and some of the drumming urgency from pop punk, in an aesthetic similar to Aussie heroes The Presets, or their Melbourne sound compatriots City Calm Down but with a tone that’s totes their own. They are working on a new EP, and have given us a sampler to taste. We here at PTP are soon to do a meet and greet with the band, check them out in a practice session and ask some questions so stayed tuned for that!!

And for a bit of an Aussie connection, the video is directed by Nash Edgerton who has worked on videos for Ben Lee, Eskimo Joe, Bob Dylan and is the brother of actor Joel Edgerton. On the side he also did a bit of stunt work in the Matrix and Star Wars movie trilogies. Not a bad CV I reckon!

First off, here’s the official music video to the track ‘Lights’ which debut a few weeks back from the upcoming self-titled album to be released on September 7, 2010 on Matador Records.

The video is directed by Charlie White who also created the clip for the single ‘Evil’, from the album Antics. The guys have also been kind enough to offer the HD video for download so head on over to their site and grab a copy of it yourself.

Secondly, as an added bonus (and the fact I love Interpol…), here’s the second single that has just been released:

Interpol – Barricade

So what are your thoughts on the sound of an Interpol post Carlos D?

Also one of my favourite guns in MW2 online due to it’s stopping power and large round capacity. But enough gamer nerdishness…

Street Sweeper Social Club is g-tarist and MEGAULTRADEMIGOD to guitar twanging long haired males around the world Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine fame… he’s still political and using music as his message delivery vehicle, but with a different guy with an afro spitting the rhymes: Boots Riley of political rap group The Coup.

Check out their live cover of paper planes… I’m not so sure about this one i think their masculine rock and/or roll edge takes a bit away from the high flying & free spirited melody of MIA’s voice and Diplo’s musical production but see what you think:

They have a new EP coming out called The Ghetto Blaster featuring this cover of MIA’s paper planes, and also LL Cool J’s mama said knock you out!

So this has been sitting in my inbox a while getting neglected but no more till I found out So-Me and Machine Molle worked on the music video.

And the French marketing machine is up and running as I want the New Era flat cap and track n field jacket that features are faux Jamaica merchandise…

So anwyay, who are Jamaica you are asking? Well, formally known as Poney Poney, they’re I guess you could call a lovely mix of indie-electro-synth-garage-rock. Think prominent bassline, snares and kick drums, catchy guitar riffage and subtle and simple vocals over the top.

Anyway, the guys have teamed up again with Xaiver de Rosney of Justice fame and Daft Punk’s sound engineer Peter J. Franco (just to name drop) to help out on their debut album which is slated for an August release. For those interested, the last time they collaborated under the Poney Poney name it sounded a little like this:

So yeah, a name change but still the same-same… But hey, if it aint broke then don’t fix it! If I was to rant further on that topic I could always start some hate on MGMT latest outing…

In the late 80s/early 90s, just after rock and hip hop stopped their fuedin’ and a fussin’ and got onto lovin’ … with the Run DMC x Aerosmith collabo, and with Rick Rubin producing tracks for the Beastie Boys with metal G-tar riffs (No Sleep Till Brooklyn, and maybe Sabotage but don’t quote me on this I didn’t do my homework)… a movie was released that I am yet to watch: “Judgement Night” about streets and gangsters or something (I’ll watch it at some point.)

Anyways it had an OST soundtrack that featured an entire album of heavyweight rap/rock collaborations like Faith No More & Boo Yaa T.R.I.B.E., Sonic Youth & Cypress Hill, Helmet & House of Pain to name a few (this played a part in spawning the ill-begotten nu metal genre, but the less said about that the better.)

1. Helmet and House of Pain – “Just Another Victim”
2. Teenage Fanclub and De La Soul – “Fallin’”
3. Living Colour and Run DMC – “Me, Myself, & My Microphone”
4.Biohazard and Onyx – “Judgment Night”
5.Slayer and Ice-T – “Disorder” (Medley of 3 Exploited songs: “War”, “UK ’82″, and “Disorder”)
11. Pearl Jam and Cypress Hill – “Real Thing”

Then around the mid-90s the movie Spawn, based on the Todd Macfarlane comic book character was released, which I also haven’t watched. But its OST was yet another revolutionary step in artist/genre collaborations… this time it was big hitters from electronica and rock/metal… including that awesome Crystal Method/Filter “Trip Like I Do” track, collabs between Aussie Silverchair & Vitro, Slayer & Atari Teenage Riot, Korn & The Dust Brothers and more!

In high school I was first exposed to what appeared to be a warehouse RAVE in that movie Blade, then blood rained out the sprinklers with that FULLY SICK Blade Rave track!! Then Blade II came out (late 90s) which wasn’t very good (I saw it)… but its soundtrack completed the COLLABORATION circle this time between hip hop and electronica! I think the reason these collaborations were spawned was because the same musical director/producer guy had a hand in all their making. Check out all these albums… these songs are MUST LISTENS for anybody who grew up in the entire 90s decade and loves their POPular music!!!

Almost let the week slip without some music. Tsk… Tsk… Tsk… I’m gonna blame the weather or perhaps that much of my day is taken up with work (ala corporate day slave type) and nights hanging with mates and/or seeing Girl Talk and/or Them Crooked Vultures. The latter being an absolute monster gig in some rather disgusting heat at Festival Hall. I am working on a YouTube page for the site so I can upload my shitty mobile videos of such gigs up. Can’t be a paparazzo at every gig…

Anyway, my selection of tracks for the past fortnight (well, I did miss out on last week’s post…) is after the jump…

Tim & Jean – Come Around
One of the finalist in this year’s Triple J Unearthed High competition. Nice bit of synth pop goodness which reminds me a bit of Passion Pit or of Walter Meego. You can’t help but think happy thoughts and good times. Kinda like the summer holidays really…

Cassian – Fuck Song
Yes, I know, I wrote about Cassian last week and yes, it’s been floating around the web for a while now but it’s so damn groovy! Think more 80s funk/porn groove though and let’s be honest, deep down we all love it. I guess it makes the name of the track that much more appropriate.

Big Scary – Hey Somebody
Ah, Big Scary. Not a true description of the duo. Scary? No.., Big? Very soon I think . With vocals that remind me of a mix of Jeff Buckley and Robert Smith and a wicked indie garage rock sound, think a bit of Strokes, Whites Stripes and even Kings Of Leon. They’ve even supported the Editors during their nation tour earlier this month. A big thanks to our music mole, Hall-E for introducing these guys to my ears.

Alberta Cross – Song Three Blues
Some more blues/rock/croon for your ears. This is the opening track to their debut ‘Broken Side Of Time’ and really sets the mood of an album full of epic riffs and brooding blues. One of my favourite albums from last year.

Miike Snow – Silvia (Sinden Remix)
Something a bit different from Sinden here. Normally one would expect a fidgety ghetto house killer but what you get here a piece of I guess you could call blissful progressive house. The vocal track is kept to minimum here but when it is introduced it is a nice compliment to the rest of the music.

Bag Raiders – Nil By Mouth (Knightlife Remix)
Gonna throw it out there that this track probably isn’t the most well known of the Raiders tracks. When you take two of the big breakout local electronic acts from last year and let them flex their synthy space disco muscles you will eventually finish with something a bit special.

Broken Bells – The High Road
Another collaboration band here. Broken Bells is a new project between Danger Mouse who is one half of Gnarls Barkley amongst other things, and James Mercer of The Shins. This track is the opening single to their forthcoming album in March and I’ve gotta say I like what I hear.

Grizzly Bear – Boy From School (Hot Chip Cover)
Wow! What a cover! 2009 indie darlings Grizzly Bear have recently in the country on tour and popped into Triple J for their ‘Like A Version’ breakfast segment and decided to cover this Hot Chip classic. Funnily enough, Hot Chip are also the feature artists this week also.

And done! Hope that covers everyone for last and now this week’s music fix. Now to gear up for Calvin Harris tonight and the monstrosity that is the Big Day Out tomorrow. As always, if you dig the artist/music the go buy it whether physical/digital and go see them live. Your conscience and the artists will love you more for it!
