I must admit I am a little jealous that the Gold Coast gets the addition of Trentmoller, A-Trak and The Rapture. The last two are playing at Falls Festival from memory.  Maybe one of the other writers will post something about that festival… Of course you’re probably all aware that Armin Van Buuran is doing an epic 9 hour set here in Melbourne on NYE so that explains his absence at Melbourne’s Summadayze also.

This is what happens when you combine that Deadmau5 electro progressive-ish house sound with equal parts of 8-bit glitch, a solid, driving kick drum and A-Trak-esque sirens… Big fan of this one.

Classixx – Cold Act Ill (Extended Mix)

Rad video clip with heaps of old school skating. Love it! One of Classixx’s earlier tracks here giving the Roxanne Shante/Biz Markie track ‘Def Fresh Crew’ a spacey nu-disco polish over.

Defeat – D.I.Y.

Kavinsky reincarnate? Well the man is back with a new EP this month, but no, Defeat is a local producer from Western Australia and after you give this track a listen you’ll definitely see that the Dead Crusier was obviously an influence. Not that that’s a bad thing at all!

Jump Jump Dance Dance – Show Me The Night (GRUM Remix)

Some lovely synth pop remix goodness from GRUM of all people. Saw a bit of Jump Jump Dance Dance at Future yesterday but unfortunately the shoddy weather started right when their set was on so a fair few punters would’ve missed out on a nice indie pop set.

How To Make It In America is my new favourite TV show, well until Entourage comes back on… Anyway, this is the music that is used in the open sequence of the show. Did I tell you that Kid Cudi is a part of the cast?

DJ Falcon – Honeymoon

This is up there as one of my all time favourite French Touch track and the relevance of it getting posted isn’t just just self indulgence… It is in honour of the great man touring Melbourne in late April! Gonna be another good long weekend! So who is DJ Falcon you may be asking? Cousin to Alan Braxe and co-collaborator with Thomas Bangalter in the group Together (‘So Much Love To Give’ and ‘Together’).  He is without doubt, a part of French House royalty.

Yo! So last week’s post didn’t really happen, chock-a-block busy with friends leaving, Lunar New Year, post St Kilda Festival shenanigans and personal stumbling blocks in the real world… But you’re not here for the whine, you’re here for music.

Anyway, this week’s post is mostly dedicated to the nu disco, electro/fidget bangers and big room tracks that have been given a fair lashing in the car, at work, home, gigs etc… Since I did miss last week’s post it only seems fair I bump up the quantity of tracks. Whether their quality I’ll let you decide… As usual, the files are after the jump.

Classixx – I’ll Get You (Featuring Jeppe)

“Do you like bass? Do you, do you bass?”

Can’t help but crack a smile when this tune gets played. In case you’re wondering who is offering the vocals to this nu disco pop gem, it’s Jeppe Laursen of Junior Senior (R.I.P.) fame. I do find it kinda ironic that for a track that features the line “Do you like bass?”, to be kinda lacking a solid bass beat. Not that it matter since it’s such an awesome track regardless.

The video is directed by none other than Mark “The Cobrasnake” Hunter. And in case you didn’t know, Classixx are playing Sorry Grandma! tonight so swing on by and enjoy some good nu disco fun. Be sure to mention that you’re on my guest list and use the password “Optimo“!

Donna Summer – Bad Girls (SonicC Bootleg)

Ah disco… I sometimes think that perhaps I was born in the wrong era because there would be no doubt I’d be out each weekend dancing away this stuff. Wait, I kinda do that now… Anyway, SonicC is on a good thing here by not messing around with the godfather Moroder‘s work here and tweaks the track enough that it wouldn’t sound out of sort on a d-floor today.

Lee Mortimer & Foamo – Superman (Original Mix)

While not as massive as the epic that is ‘Blau!’, this electro/fidgety track certainly is strong enough to stand on it’s own. A good track to use to shift a set up a notch after a chilled start. Well that’s what I tend to use it for…

Vitalic – Poison Lips

I swear that Vitalic has been inspired by or sampled Stardust who sampled Chaka Khan with the little bit of loopage at the start. Give it a listen and you’ll know what I’m talking about… This track is dark, sultry, sexy all at the same time… And I fucking love it! The video aint too bad either:

Absolutely love the 8-bit noises, distortion and squeaks that populate this track, and that haunting vocals remind me a little of Alison Goldfrapp. Some nice layered stuff here! Speaking of which, she’s got some new stuff out at the moment too…

Dustin Zahn – Stranger (To Stability) (Len Faki Podium Mix)

Perhaps I should retract my previous statement of ‘Poison Lips’ being dark as this track by Dustin Zahn kinda shits all over that… Dark, tribal, heavy and downright evil. If you dig the Proxy, or anything from that dark techno scene you’ll be a fan of this. Tell you what, once you take a step down the dark side in a set it’s kinda tricky to bring it back to a happy place haha! This one is definitely for the big room.

Duke Dumont – Hoy!

There’s something about Middle Eastern music that kinda sucks me in. Powerful and complex at the same time… This track in particular with it’s hypnotic use of drums/percussion and Arabic woodwinds and the whatnot puts me (and possibly you the listener…) into this tribal-like trance.

A-Trak x Drake x Birdman – Loonies To Blow

“I’m on my Disney shit, Goofy flow/ On records I’m Captain Hook and my new car is Ruffio/ Damn, where’d my roof just go?“

Electro hip-hop? Me likey! Throw in some nonsensical yet sharp lyrics and you’re on a winner. Watch this track cross boundaries of indie/hipster/commercial circles….

Sway – Mercedes-Benz

Wicked little sample of DJ Mark The 45 King‘s ’900 Number’. Yes, it’s not the first time this has been sampled, but hey, it works. The next party tune for your house warming. Did I mention that airhorns feature a fair bit throughout the track? Airhorns! YES!

Wondering if Sway got himself a car from this plug? Did I also see Pharrell in this video?

Dada Life – Let’s Get Bleeped Tonight (Tiësto Remix)

Ah the track affectionately know around our crew as “the one Tiësto dropped with the Beetroots backspin”. I don’t think I’m ever going to forget the night the Big T dropped ‘Blau!’ and followed immediately after with this killer.  Tiësto doing electro you’re probably thinking? Well it’s better than some of the stuff that is currently on ‘Kaleidoscope’… Oh schnapp!

Florence + The Machine – You’ve Got The Love (Jamie xx Re-Work Featuring The xx)

“You’ve got the love. You’ve got the love…”

Jamie from The xx remixing Florence + The Machine covering The Source/Candi Staton. Whew! Now that we got that out of the way… Bit of a chilled breakbeat vibe thanks to the stuttering snares and harps/strings to this remix which makes it a great choice to start off a set early on. The pitch bending/sampling of Florence’s voice in the chorus is also quite cool.

Powerful like a gorilla, yet soft and yielding like a Nerf ball...

Yep that’s right, yours truly has a gig on this Sunday at the Fringe as a part of the St Kilda Festival wind-down. So come down for a laugh if your loved ones let you… Better yet, why don’t the both of you do!

Bit of dancehall, dub, wonk, jungle etc. All in all it equals whole lot of win. Diplo and the Cheap Thrills crew really have been serious pushers of this sound this year. Not that there is much of the year left…

Alice In Chains – Check My Brain
Love the lawnmover-like drone from the guitars in this track. Something to break up the usual electronica that I post up…

I.C.O.N.E. – Magnum Burns
A rad take on the classic Magnum P.I. theme. If my memory serves me right this track hovers around the 130bpm mark so it’s no early intro or fadeout track. One to keep the bodies moving on the dfloor.

Munk – Down In L.A. (Shazam Instrumental Mix)
Now there was nothing wrong with the original but damn, Shazam takes this track to another level of synth pop goodness. The last minute in this track is aural bliss. Work those keys!

Noah & The Whale – Blue Skies (The Twelves Remix)
Absolutely love this remix by The Twelves as they’re able to make what is already a rather uplifting song that little more happier and chill.

Shock One & Phetsta – The Sun 2009
Occasionally I don’t mind listening to a bit of drum and bass. Bit of Goldie, High Contrast, DJ Marky, Bad Company etc… Anyway, this little epic from two local producers has been getting a bit of airplay so I thought I’d share the love.

Thomas Bangalter – Spinal Scratch
Yes, it’s that Thomas. This one is trawling back through the archives to good old 1996. I actually kinda shudder to think what kind of music I might’ve been listening to back then…

Back after a mini hiatus which just kinda crept up on me. So apologies if you’ve been hanging for some music. During the hiatus there were a few tunes that pricked my ears and no it isn’t just Julian Casablancas’ single “11th Dimension”. So onto the music:

British India – Vanilla

British India in black and white...

First single released off the group’s forthcoming album “Avalanches” which is due out at some point next year. An epic tune that like many other epics this year, “Vanilla” start off slow and builds up to resounding chorus. Both Hall-E and myself are big fans of the drums in this track – machine-gun-like violence! There’s also a video for the single which has recently been released which you can enjoy below:

British India is also touring the single around the country this October through to November. Be sure to welcome the boys home when they play at the Corner on November 6th.

Canvas Kites – Wayside

Born from the recent hiatus of Sydney’s Mercy Arms, Canvas Kites are set to take you to a place that’s a little more carefree. Dom from Triple J’s Home & Hosed has compared their sound to The Smiths and Flying Nun. Interesting… Anyway, give the track a listen yourself and make your own call. Here’s the video to “Wayside” which does a nice job of catching that dreamy, idyllic vibe the track creates:

Looks like black/white videos are on the way back in eh? Canvas Kites are also touring around the country at the moment so if you’re in Melbourne you can catch them at The Northcote Social Club and Revolver on November 13th and 14th respectively.

BURNS – First Move (Fred Falke Remix)

BURNS + Fred Falke = Dancefloor winner

In recent times Fred Falke has been quite the prolific remixer with most in my opinion being rather forgettable this year. This remix for BURNS however is definitely one of his better works with plenty of French Touch elements throughout the track making it a winner in my books. My hot tip is that this tune could become quite the dfloor regular as we approach summer. If you were wondering what the original version sounded like before it got “Falkenised” then look below and enjoy, electro-disco-glitchness at its best:

When I first heard this track my initial thought was, “Hmm… This sounds likes a bit like The Smiths” and surprise, surprise, Johnny Marr is a guitarist in the band. Did you also know that Marr also played in Modest Mouse since 2006 ? Thank wikipedia for that fact. Apart from the wickedly addictive slide echo guitar intro, its the chorus that keeps sucking me in for repeat listens. Awesome husk on the vocals! Since I’ve featured videos for all the above tracks it’d be unfair if I didn’t do the same for The Cribs so enjoy!

A fresh arrival in my inbox today so I figured better get it onto the site before it slips out of mind. Why I’m still up at 3am is a whole entire kettle of fish…

So yeah, the single from the French House music legends will come with remixes from Radioslave, Reset!, The Subs and of course Don Diablo (which we’re featuring here) on November 5th via Cassius Records. As a teaser to us mortals, their record label and co. have decided the masses can get their grubby fingers on Don Diablo’s remix for free! Not only that, but in 320 kbps digital glory! I lub yoo interwebz…

Onto the remix itself… After a couple of listens I think I’m becoming a bit of a fan. What can I say, I’m bias when it comes to Disco/Funk House/French Touch/splashy synth work… A funkier approach has been taken here with a few hints to the dark and menacing sound the original mix has.
