Die Leuchtpunktordnungen zeigen Fernsehbildschirme, welche im Moment des Ausschaltens fotografiert wurden. Der Auslöser wird gleichzeitig mit dem Netzschalter des Fernsehers betätigt. Die Kamera erfasst das Bild in dem Moment, in dem es zusammenbricht. Das Fernsehbild ist nicht mehr zu sehen – stattdessen eine Struktur aus Licht, welche in einem Bruchteil einer Sekunde wieder in der Bildröhre verschwindet und in sich zusammenfällt. Das Fernsehbild wird bei diesem Vorgang abstrahiert und auf sein wesentliches Element reduziert: Das Licht bzw. eine Ordnung, welche aus dem Leuchtstrahl der Röhre erzeugt wird. Diese Ordnung ist jedoch bei jedem Fernseher unterschiedlich. Auch die Belichtungszeit und der Zeitpunkt der Aufnahme haben einen wesentlichen Einfluss auf den Bildgegenstand – je später die Kamera ausgelöst wird, desto weiter ist der Zusammenbruch des Bildes fortgeschritten. Die Auslösung der Kamera und das Ausschalten des Fernsehers geschehen manuell. Die Fotografien thematisieren den wesentlichen Unterschied zwischen Abstraktion und Konkretisierung in der Fotografie oder genauer gesagt: Das Verhältnis von Fremdreferenz und Selbstreferenz. Sie zeigen das Zusammenbrechen des Fernsehbildes und damit das Zusammenbrechen der Referenz. Die Leuchtpunktordnungen beschreiben also eines der wesentlichen Merkmale der Konkreten Fotografie.

The images open up a dialogue between the relationship of abstraction and concretion in photography as the breakdown of the television picture describes the breakdown of external reference. The result is self-referential, concrete photography.

On May 19, 2005, NASA’s Mars Exploration Rover Spirit captured this stunning view as the Sun sank below the rim of Gusev crater on Mars. This Panoramic Camera mosaic was taken around 6:07 in the evening of the rover’s 489th Martian day, or sol.

Sunset and twilight images are occasionally acquired by the science team to determine how high into the atmosphere the Martian dust extends, and to look for dust or ice clouds. Other images have shown that the twilight glow remains visible, but increasingly fainter, for up to two hours before sunrise or after sunset. The long Martian twilight (compared to Earth’s) is caused by sunlight scattered around to the night side of the planet by abundant high altitude dust. Similar long twilights or extra-colorful sunrises and sunsets sometimes occur on Earth when tiny dust grains that are erupted from powerful volcanoes scatter light high in the atmosphere.

Since we’re on the subject of NASA and space…

In Apple‘s all you can eat lawsuit bonanza against anyone and everyone making products and using software reminiscent of their iProducts, Samsung cited Stanley Kubrick‘s film A Space Odyssey: 2001 in its defense against an IP infringement claim, as tablet-like devices appeared in the film (and were also described in the book by Arthur C. Clarke.)

I just started playing LucasArts game studio adventure The Dig and screen capped the pic above… (I don’t know the story because I never played it in the ’90s, but as it was based on an idea by Steven Spielberg, I’m guessing it contains, or relates to aliens)… So this is probably evidence-enough for George Lucas to jump into the fray and start suing everybody for copyright infringement of tablet-like communication devices, amirite? My iPhone is shaped very similarly to the device… and it has icon app buttons too!

Came across this clip a while ago, just thought I’d re-up it to go hand in hand with the My Little Ponies figures post. Film editor Bill Brewer has re-cut MLP clips to synch with the Wu Tang‘s “Shame” in a rocking amalgamation of intermeme and the rap music that gives the kids the brain damage!

I have no idea how I know about, or even LIKE My Little Pony, having never seen the cartoon and not grown up with it. But I do know I have the internets to thank for turning them into a lulzworthy meme and series of macros. I stumbled across these My Little Pony figures (from someone else’s blog which I cant remember), and checked out the creator Mari Kasurinen‘s site (where you can drop some cool coins to acquire some if you like them). These are really awesome and highly reminiscent of kidrobot‘s figures and other vinyl toy artist-customisable figures!!
