I first discovered the weird comedy stylings of Adult Swim‘s comedy cartoon block (didn’t watch the anime block) on the Cartoon Network years ago and have never looked back (cos you just can’t look away from their wacky creations). Sealab, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Harvey Birdman, The Brak Show, Venture Bros – cartoons straight from the minds of stoned 20-somethings with graphic and cartoon inclinations. I particularly love the silent moments and pans of confused and stunned faces after one character says something especially bizarro. We’ve all been there. You know what I’m talking about. No? Ok.
In between cartoons Adult Swim plays “bumps” featuring a viewer Q&A mail-in and response with the coolest sounding beats, largely hip hop instrumentals from the likes of the late great J Dilla and Flying Lotus. There was one particular song I just had to track down by posting on this board, (which is dedicated to, and catalogues every single Adult Swim bump)… and board members ID’d the track for me, the instrumental to Dudley Perkins‘ track “Solitude” by Madlib … so good.
Adult Swim Music regularly puts out mix tape albums featuring FREE MUSIC from the bawsest beatmakers, rappers and metal bands… and their latest release features a who’s who(m) of beatsmiths today, with a strong bent on UK sounds including OG dubstep from Kode 9, Untold and Burial, bristol dubstep from Ginz, instrumental hip-hop, glitch and wonk from Starkey, SBTRKT, Zomby and more!! The line-up is absolutely insane!!
